I going to write a few columns this year on advice about how to win and be happy as you play and, most of all, how to handle yourself at the poker game. most of us are our own worst enemy--in the care of our health, in the way we play poker and the way we deal with life and the poker game. in this column i going to try to tell you about some of the problems that a lot of poker players have and how to plug some of your leaks. many cardsmiths win huge amounts of money on a consistent basis, but they have some bad habits. they may bet sports to excess, like the girls a little too much, go drinking too often, get into dope, fail to get enough rest between poker games or visit the craps table too frequently. stu ungar is a classic example of a wonderful poker player who could not control his life away from the table. oh yes, there is a new movie out on stu's life. when they were making the movie, the producer asked me to tell him about my playing with stu! i looking forward to seeing the dvd!--i want to see if any of my remarks are in the film. like the little dutch boy who used his finger to plug the leak in the dam, you must plug your personal leaks and curb your bad habits if you are to be successful at gambling. i know a top tournament poker player who has immense earning power at the poker table, but he has a problem--he loves craps. he can talk a game of control, but he has no control at the craps table. a few months ago after he had made a particularly large tournament win, he got his head cut off at the craps table and was flopping around the casino like a chicken. he saw me playing poker and asked me for a little assistance. "friend, leave the craps alone, " i advised as i provided him with the funds that he had requested. he replied, "oh, i'm going to, johnny." he promised. but he hasn't. you must not use your playing bankroll, the tools of your business, for anything except business. if you were a carpenter, you wouldn't go to the pawn shop and hock your saw and hammer. in the same way, you can't hock your bankroll playing craps or any other gambling game in which you are at a disadvantage to the house. other top professional poker players love to bet sports. one in particular, a man who has held high executive positions in many card rooms, but he cannot handle his sports habit. he can win all the money he'll ever need at the poker table, but loses it in other sports betting activities. this man has made me a lot of money--because a lot of the time, i get to invest in his tournament poker play. but it would be better for him if he did not bet sports and saved his money for tournament entry fees. there are a lot of loan sharks who prey on these poker players--the hip pocket bankers know that a lot of the tournament poker players will need money for entry fees. and these money lenders also know that these good players can and do win a lot of the tournaments and that they will get their money back--plus--with no problem. you must have strong discipline to be successful in poker. you cannot deviate from what it is that you do so well. if you do, you are somewhat like a pilot who can fly an airplane really well getting a job with a jackhammer. until next time, remember to stay lucky!!! editor's notes: you may contact ok-j at his e-mail oklajohnny aol , or play poker live, online with johnny, carol and sarah at seniorpoker. com. johnny's book, "the gentleman gambler, " is in its third printing. contact johnny for your copy and new casino.
