President signed, president informed employee that abc would supply, inter alia, "10 blackjack tables, 2 crap tables, 1 roulette table, 1 money wheel and 1 caribbean stud poker table" at events to be held on july 31, 1995 and on august 3, 1995, for , 330 per night. id. president also described, more than 4 months before the first event was to take place, how the dealers at those events would be dressed. id. 66. abc used fictitious business's services, including the services of r. doe, at the 7 31 95 event. see tr. pp. 433-34, 442, 445 president ; . 67. on 7 31 95, r. doe was arrested for the offense of participating in the operation of a charitable game 230 ilcs 30 8 ; after acting as a blackjack pit boss at the. casino slotCully and merlyn met in the oak room of the plaza. they didn't talk about the problem until they had finished lunch and then walked through central park. merlyn told cully the whole story, and cully nodded his head and made some sympathetic remarks. from what he could gather it was strictly a small-time grifter's operation that the fbi had stumbled onto. even if merlyn were convicted, he would get only a suspended sentence. there wasn't that much to worry about. except that merlyn was such a square guy he'd be ashamed of having a conviction on his record. that should be the worst of his worries, cully thought. when merlyn mentioned paul hemsi, the name rang a bell in cully's head. but now, as they walked through central park and merlyn told him about the meeting with hemsi senior in the garment center, everything clicked. one of the many garment center tycoons who came to vegas for long weekends and the christmas and new year holidays, charles hemsi was a big gambler and a devoted cunt man. even when he came to vegas with his wife, cully had to arrange for charlie hemsi to get a piece. right on the floor of the ca-sino with mrs. hemsi playing roulette, cully would slip the key, its room-numbered wooden plaque attached, into charlie hemsi's hand. cully would whisper what time the girl would be in the room. charlie hemsi would wander out to the coffee shop to es-cape his wife's suspicious eye. from the coffee shop he would saunter down the long labyrinth of hotel corridors to the room numbered on the key plaque. inside the room he would find a luscious girl waiting for him. it would take less than a half hour. charlie would give the girl a black hundred-dollar chip, then, thoroughly relaxed, saunter down the blue-carpet-ed corridors into the casino. he would pass by the roulette table and watch his wife gamble, give her a few encouraging words, some chips, never the blacks, then plunge joyfully back into the wild melee of the crap tables. a big, bluff, good-natured guy, a lousy gambler who nearly always lost, a degenerate gambler who never quit when he was ahead. cully had not remembered him immediately because charlie henisi had been trying to take the cure. hemsi had markers out all over vegas. the xanadu casino cage alone held fifty grand of charlie henisi's iou's. some of the casinos had already sent dunning letters. gronevelt had told cully to hold off. "he may bail himself out, " gronevelt said. "then he'll remember we were nice guys and we'll get most of his action. money in the bank when that asshole gambles and craps for fun. The electropalatometer or electropalatograph or palatograph ; is a computer-based system that provides artificial visual feedback that is particularly illustrative of sounds requiring lingual contact with the palate, such as k and g . electropalatometric epg ; feedback electropalatometers consist of a pseudopalate that is worn against the palate and in which electrodes are embedded, although efforts have been made to use pressure transducers rather than electrodes murdock, goozee, veidt, scott, & meyers, 2004 ; . the electrode leads are fed out of the mouth to a computer and when a region of the pseudopalate is contacted by the tongue, circuits are completed between the electrodes in that region and read by the computer. the computer monitor displays the area of the contact on a cartoon of the palate and electrode array. the feedback is direct and online, although articulation cannot be immediately linked to acoustics because the pseudopalate and extruding electrode leads distort the sounds produced. therefore, any connections between articulation, speech acoustics and audition need to be accomplished offline. so too, tactile and proprioceptive feedback associated with lingual contact with the pseudopalate differ somewhat from that produced with the pseudopalate removed. in order to benefit from epg feedback patients need to be able to generalize from the artificial feedback condition to more natural speaking situations. although most epg systems do not provide direct information about movement or contact pressure, epg has been used to describe the lingual-palatal contact patterns for a range of speaking tasks, and to explain the speech articulation of disordered populations, such as speakers with dysarthria, cleft palate, and articulation phonological disorders gibbon, 2002; gibbon, ellis, & crampin, 2004; hartelius, theodoros, & murdoch, 2005; mcauliffe, ward, & murdoch, 2006; mcleod, roberts, & sita, 2006 ; . it similarly has been applied to speakers with hearing impairment. for example, dagenais and critz-crosby 1991 ; identified five patterns commonly associated consonants produced by children with profound hearing loss. the patterns included an open configuration with little or no contact, a closed configuration with full lingual-palatal contact, front occlusion with lingual contact around the entire alveolar ridge, back occlusion with contact only toward that back of the palate, and a grooved configuration with contact at the extreme lateral sides of the palate. the open configuration was the most common pattern observed, especially with lingual stops. dagenais and critz-crosby 1992 ; also found that vowels produced by children with profound hearing loss were characterized by a flatter tongue posture and less vertical movement than those produce by children with normal hearing. dagenais and critz-crosby 1991; 1992 ; further observed that these patterns often were used idiosyncratically by children with profound hearing loss, particularly those with poor intelligibility. although most studies using epg have used it to characterize the articulatory patterns of different speaker populations or to characterize differences across speech segments, articulatory contexts and languages; a number of studies have been conducted looking at the effectiveness of the feedback provided by epg when treating speech impairment in speakers with normal hearing. for example, epg has been used to effectively treat speech production in patients with apraxia of speech howard & varley, 1995 ; , various forms of dysarthria gibbon & wood, 2003; hartelius, theodoros, & murdoch, 2005 ; cleft palate scobbie, wood, & wrench, 2004 ; down's syndrome gibbon, mcneill, wood, & watson, 2003 ; and school-aged children who stutter craig et al., 1996 ; . a restricted number of epg treatment studies have been reported with children with hearing loss. pantelemidou, herman and thomas 2003 ; reported a case study in which epg was used to treat the k and g productions of a child who wore a cochlear implant. pre to post-treatment comparisons of lingual to velar placement suggested improvement; although the perceptual assessment of the target productions were not error-free and experimental control was limited. similarly, bernhardt et al. 2003 ; used epg in and best craps. Terry: brass rail, exactly. yeah, the brass rail. while working in the brass rail we worked there regularly for long period of time. basie was working himself out of debt. probably not making much more money than i was. i was making 5 a week. buddy defranco was making a big salary. of course, the office that basie was working out of was the same office that was handling buddy defranco. buddy was on the rise in bread, and basie was going down, because they tried to get some of the money back from him that he had lost in the crap game. i'm trying to think of the name of the guy who managed willard alexander. willard alexander was the one who was running the basie band, and he was also running buddy defranco. brower: did do you remember wardell gray being in that group? terry: absolutely. i was the best man at his wedding while he was in that group. he had been married to geri gray, the dancer who just recently passed away. that's how geri gray got her name, from wardell gray. at this point he was married to dorothy. he was getting married to dorothy. they got married in [las] vegas, and i was the best man at their wedding. at one point, when bob graf was with us at the brass rail carlos gastel, who was a representative for the woody herman band, used to come in the club every night and listen to the band. little did we realize he was scouting bob graf to go with woody herman's band, which he eventually did. bob graf is an obnoxiously little, nice looking blond kid, but he used to when i first brought him up, we used to room together, because i was to get him acclimated. he'd get up in the morning, comb his hair, and say, "do you realize that i'm better looking than 50% of the women on this earth?" that's the kind of a person he was. of course i don't have to tell you what i had to say to him. but anyway, he eventually allow carlos gastel to scout him out of the band, put him in woody herman's band. right after that we got charlie rouse for a while oh no. we got bones wardell. i call him bones. we got wardell first, and that's when wardell met dorothy and got married. then when wardell left, we got rouse charlie rouse. brower: what was your estimation of wardell gray as a player? terry: my estimation of wardell? he was a magnificent player. very unique, very individual player, very articulate, and a very knowledgeable person. he was a guy that he was an unusual type of cat. very thin. he was so thin i always compare him with miles. they'd be so skinny, if they turn sideways, they would have marked them absent. he was really a skinny little cat. he loved to cook. he's from oklahoma. he was some sort of an indian: choctaw or something. he worked with a lot of big bands. he and i became very, very good friends, real tight. even after he left the band, we used to write each other. at one point, i had heard that he was using stuff, and i spoke to 75 smithsonian jazz oral history program and craps 5 count. Generally represented by exactly one peak. thus, the approach provides a segmentation of the rnain chain into its residues. moreover, initial experiments have shown that the critical point representation can be used for the recognition of secondary structure motifs, through the use of simple geometry-based rules. the application of these rules results in the identification of motifs with an associated measure of the degree of confidence. Presented po' lightnin's troubles, joys and spur-of-themoment observations on everything from natural disasters hurricane beulah on this video ; to astronauts the 1962 bluesville recording, happy blues for john glenn ; . "lightnin' hopkins can turn the beam of his perception on a sudden incident, " wrote paul oliver in conversation with the blues, "an immediate phenomenon and highlight it in a spontaneously created blues." his reputation spread nationally via recordings and radio exposure in the early 1950s. a decade later he was playing carnegie hall and being hailed as "the last great blues singer." if not that, lightnin' was surely one of the last to display firsthand the imprint of such rustic masters as jefferson and alexander. his raw poetic gift was tireless and his facile guitar lines much-copied by white admirers who saw him play endless national and on rare occasions, international ; tours during the last twenty-some years of his life. his deeply personal music not only reflected the experiences of himself and his community but touched a universal nerve. chris strachwitz, who often recorded lightnin', has called his records "brief audio snapshots of one of the great folk poets to emerge from the african-american experience in texas." that experience was noted for its brutal cycle of grueling labor rewarded by grim impoverishment. music offered a rare release from it. "i've been a poor man all my days, " lightnin' relates between songs on this video. "i never was born with a dime, nothin'. but i got to hustlin' and i learned how to knock up on a little change." his hustle was blues and the guitar. lightnin's first, jas obrecht wrote in a 1982 guitar player eulogy, was homemade at age seven from "a cigar box, a plank and chicken wire." he picked up the rudiments of guitar from his older brother, joel and was already playing competently at age eight when he first met lemon jefferson at a baptist picnic near buffalo, texas. lightnin' vividly recalled the encounter some 40 years later for samuel charters: "he had a crowd of people around him and i was standing there looking at him play and i just went to playing [on] my guitar just what he was playing. so he say, `who's that playing that guitar?' so they say, `oh, that's just a little boy here knocking on the guitar.' he says, `no, he's playing that guitar, ' says, `where he at? come here, boy.'. You've hit the jackpot . " yes ; the hitching post had given away to the parkin g meter which had given way to the slot machine . did premier bennett call this progress? i turned away in disgust . Design givens: all orders are anonymous a. no one knows which offer will be fulfilled. b. no one knows the number of offers of a formulation are pending. c. no one knows when an offer will be fulfilled. d. no one know which offer is their own. e. when your order is fulfilled, you have no idea who you traded with. any attempt to formulate an offer will be fulfilled first and immediately with standing orders. the liquidity for the placeholdercurrency-for-coolthing is low enough to manipulate. conclusion: the seller may be able probabilistically meet ebay requirement 1, with a large number of accounts, each with their own coolthing. this reduces the us$-value to a crap shoot: the seller can't know how many offers he will have to fulfill to deliver the goods to the correct buyer. along the way, any mis-delivered items were given to unexpected presumably very happy ; recipients. the seller can not meet ebay requirement 2, since there is no way to independently confirm the delivery was made to the appropriate party. in the end, the seller has given away all of his coolthings and doesn't even know if the buyer has been ripped of or worse, taken him for a ride by collecting all of them for the price of one, while demanding a refund. therefore, the ebay market is resisted. though not quite as effectively as in a fully liquid market. Scm: the new album, "a match and some gasoline, " is out now. how would you describe it musically? i think the album is reminiscent of some of your earlier stuff. dl: i would never call it attempt to make a part two to "destruction by definition" or "battle hymns, " but i think it's a lot more like those two records than the last two we put out. we are really happy with the work that we did and i think with the initial reactions i have been reading, a lot of people are really digging the record. as far as style goes, there's some ska-oriented stuff on there and some balls-out thrash punk like "battle hymns." people have been saying it's more along the lines of "battle hymns." hey, it's all good. that's the style we do. scm: i noticed more of a political stance on this album, more specifically the artwork and the lyrics. dl: it's true. we've always had political-oriented songs throughout our history but not as much as there is on this record and we've also done a lot of social commentary and borderline political stuff. we certainly had our share of silly songs with the old stuff. there are a lot of current issues that are contained in the lyrics on this record. me and jay lead singer ; , as far as the songs that we write, nowadays we feel like we want to convey some sort of message that means something. i can pretty much say with some conviction that nobody is ever going to see another "vans song" or "new girl" from the suicide machines. scm: so musically, you've matured a little and politics are more of an inspiration? dl: i would never call us a political band, but we are going to make political commentaries and we feel it is kind of necessary too because there are so many bands that just talk about complete bullshit. it's the same old crap or meaningless crap. that's fine, people are doing what they are doing. but, i think that it's good that some bands are talking about the hard issues. and it makes things harder for those bands too because when you are talking about the harder issues a lot of people don't want to hear that. they don't want to listen to music that they have to think about. they don't want to listen to music that doesn't make them happy for a second and craps table top. 13. best photo "your community" first , second prizemoney donated by grant maynard. " -huang po your feelings of emptiness will stop overtaking you once you learn to stop taking them so personally. why do we often ruin that which we most need? because our fears about our emptiness cause us to cling tightly to the things and people we feel will stave off the emptiness. trying to stop the inherent chaos of life is like trying to stop your blood from flowing. you call upon eris, yet you maintain the right to have some sense of order and stability in your life? ha! just you wait. she'll take your latent feelings of emptiness and blast your mind open with them. and as you cower and shake with fear after crossing that abyss and let's face it kiddies, the abyss will, as any experienced occultist will tell you, scare the living crap out of you and anyone who says otherwise is either lying or new aged ; , you will hear eris laughing as the bubbles of all your pretensions are popped. not because she is a bitch, though there is that, but because she handed you freedom on a silver platter, and you didn't see it. so now you get to achieve it the hard way. but, if it makes you feel any better, in time this will all seem funny to you. it could be worse, eris could have you join the discordian society or something. eris? real or unreal, whether you believe in her or not. she doesn't care. if she wants you, then you are discordian toast with hodge-podge jam and a side of chaoist bacon. and maybe, just maybe, she'll let you start and super martingale. Cpt, the black tv network, if need be. randolph added up his expenses hypothetically in his mind to cover the cost of electric cars, bikes, golf carts, wheelchairs, whatever, etc. the only problem was where and how to recharge them. then he got a brainstorm, he'd pay a research and developer to soup up a battery, and he knew just the man, the same fuel guy who hooked up the black albino dr. jeremiah `jet jacobs of mit ; . ironically, randolph doesn't realize the very train he's on is electric battery powered. that settled, randolph concentrated on the conspiracy connections, the nasty nexus between insane elaine, j.c. and louse. it was something fishy again he knew now, and it was not beyond his imagination to solve the cunning conundrum. first, elaine knows about louse, thus, she and j.c. are a setup for louse. randolph likes the truth, and the way it feels running its course through the labyrinth of lies, louse built to confound and confuse him. the gospop! music publishing deal was the tip off elaine had a rich, black, hidden hand behind her, so she'd sold randolph out long ago as she did by ripping off rump, who was unknowingly louse's deadbeat, absentee father. randolph looked out of the golden framed, picture window and marveled at the unraveling of a mystery he merely served as a pawn, a dope and yes a damn fool in, if he didn't guess the pay off and put the whole thing together, in this rich man's private car, while riding as mighty michigan, a rip tide wave of the national economy. bailey was involved with kuni, probably arms, opium and counterfeit. louse was the house nigger hustler they both needed as a front, cover and or fall guy when things got hot, he figured. j.c. was not a humanoid, nor anything godly, but simply either a sanctified savant or messiah complexed christian crazy cohort and in on the deal with elaine and kostiers. kostiers and bailey must go way back, and the j.c. miracles are merely cleverly created carbon copies of christ's career moves. randolph enjoyed the power he felt as it all fell into logical, reasonable good sense. this amazer`pocket lazer crap was the biggest trick yet, he thought smiling, and there was no reason to expose j.c., for he was harmless. as randolph knew now, the amazer`pocket lazer was being demonstrated by kuni for public consumption, or to fool the public, like kostiers was said to want with a bogus jesus and not by using joel, but j.c. that's why they wanted randolph, a black ramrod. they were going to bilk the biggest bunch of blacks in one place nationally, detroit, the city of darkness. Anyway, we will now wait to see if moore's movie will get an oscar nomination or win a golden globe.and it probably will .and thus deprive real documentary film makers from winning just as the oscar for his lie-packed bowling for columbine deprived real documentarians from a win. hollywood would rather award a slimey piece of celluloid crap an oscar that a real documentary when it fits into its political kant. and that shows you were hollywood stands these days. Played on a rustic hardwood table, this revamped classic lures you in with a colorful medieval theme featuring enchanting music and imagery. |
