"[campuses] are places of education, not of recruiting to war, " said alison bodine, president of the coalition against war on the people of iraq and internationally, who organized last week's petition against recruiters on campus. "i think this issue is really important, especially right now because of the fact that students and youth in canada are also under attack, " said bodine. "we have an increased number of recruiters on campus, so students are being constantly reminded that they can join the military and get their education paid for . . . all they have to do is and kill people in afghanistan." when students are looking for ways to afford their education, joining the canadian forces may sound like an appealing option. students who are prepared to serve in the forces both while they study and after graduation will have their tuition paid for by the government. captain holly brown, a public affairs officer for the canadian forces, said that the recruitment campaigns are in the best interest of students and the canadian military alike. she said that recruiters visit university campuses "just to provide job opportunities, " as the largest employer in canada. "we go and recruit on university campuses for the same reasons that we go in high schools, and the same rreaons that other employers go on to university campuses -- becaause we are hiring, " said brown. brown also said that recruiters going onto campuses "don't debate, " but rather attempt to stay out of the controversy that may arise. "basically canadians -- that's one of the wonderful rights we have: everyone has the right to voice their opinions, everyone has the right to protest. our policy is not to engage these people -- they say their piece, and we maintain ours . . . but we're not there to debate government policy, " said brown. In the past 25 years there have been only three motion pictures made from broadway musicals, but fortunately, more of broadway has been recorded, in a state close to the original productions, for video. originally staged in the mid-seventies, pippin was one of the first blockbuster musicals of the modern era. more so than grease, it served as a link between hair and a chorus line, and kept people believing that the art of the broadway musical had not become obsolete. it never quite made the cut for hollywood, however, so all we have now is a 1982 video production. one major number was dropped, but it is a decent and effectively directed presentation of the show, and has been released on dvd by vci home video dvd8245, ; . additionally, the program is a valuable record of the show's entire choreography, which was conceived by bob fosse at the height of his creative powers. the stage production uses the characters of charlemagne--the french king who briefly re-united europe during medieval times--and his son, pippin, to serve as a meditation upon the purpose of politics, love, life and other topics. breaking the `fourth' wall, there is a narrator who not only talks to the audience, but guides pippin through his adult education, presenting it to the audience as an entertainment, until pippin `rebels' against him and chooses his own fate. these events are presented in a circus-like atmosphere, and fosse's contribution was to devise the bridge of character movement that linked the jokey, clownish costumes of the supporting characters and irreverent atmosphere they suggested to the legitimate messages the main characters are communicating in other words, he found precisely the right level of cynicism ; . the show's songs, by stephen schwartz, are catchy as all get out, but once one views the production, the songs become indelibly fastened to fosse's swiveling seductions of movement--a complex ellipticalwithin-elliptical pattern of partial advances and withdrawals that leave one in a constant state of suspension and anticipation for the length of the show. ben vereen is the narrator and william katt is pippin, with chita rivera and martha raye in guest-starring supporting roles. the video program produced in part by `rca selectavision' ; was directed by david sheehan, who captures and even enhances the scope and rhythm of fosse's designs superbly. the full screen picture is in very good condition--considering how quickly videotape can deteriorate, we were actually surprised at how sharp the image looks and how accurate the fleshtones and other hues are. there is a touch of grain in some of the darker sequences, but otherwise the image is terrific. the jacket cover and display outputs claim the stereo sound is in dolby digital, but that is not how our amplifier reads it. in any case, the sound is very crisp--you can hear all the details in vereen's vocals--and the separations, though not elaborate, give the pro and casino guide.
