Discuss the significance of monuments and statues. ask the students why we have graves and grave markers. review the building materials they located during the building bingo game in lesson two. ask them to predict which of these materials they'd expect to see in a cemetery, and have them support their suggestions. explain that a new vocabulary will be introduced to help them understand how materials--in this case, rocks used for grave markers--change over time. guide the students in examining the illustrations that outline the processes involved in weathering. simple words like flaking and chipping generally indicate simple concepts, but words like oxidation and hydrolysis will need reviewing. U.s. overland stage starting for denver from hays city, ca. 1867 several other photographs are chronologically part of this period but form part of the themes that run through the exhibition. "u.s. overland stage, " taken around 1867, shows a stagecoach on the kansas to california route. all of the soldiers who are riding as protection are african american. 28. zalmon gilbert prison baby, ca. 1876 three other pictures 28, 29, 30 ; begin the recurring theme related to legal systems and justice. one is a cartede-visite portrait of a "prison baby" willis d. mason, born november 6, 1875 ; . it was taken by z. gilbert of joliet, illinois, and appears to be of child born to a woman held in prison. 29. samuel m. fox whipping post, delaware, ca. 1889 a second is entitled "whipping post, delaware." taken by samuel m. fox, it shows a black man tied to a post with another man preparing to flog him. it dates to 1889. 30. william van der weyde sing sing prison, ca. 1890s the third photograph is one of the most disturbing pictures in the exhibition. taken by william h. vander weyde in the 1890s at sing sing prison in ossining, new york, it shows a man being strapped into an electric chair. we know nothing about the circumstances of the situation, such as the crime, the trial, or the prisoner's name. the power of the picture speaks for itself. the rural south 31. strohmeyer and wyman cotton is king, plantation scene georgia ; , 1895 covering a span of sixty years, over thirty photographs show various aspects of the lives of african americans primarily in the rural south. as amanda smith jemand wrote in 1901: "the southerner boasts this is a white man's country. i deny it; it is my country as well as his. the south, especially, is as much the black man's as the white man's; for every plantation, town and city shows the work of his hand."8 william e. b. dubois, two years later, wrote that "in well-nigh the whole rural south the black farmers are peons, bound by law and custom to an economic slavery, from which the only escape is death or the penitentiary."9 the first photograph in this section of the exhibition is a stereograph, the title of which reads "cotton is king, plantation scene, georgia, u.s.a.". it shows field hands picking cotton, one of them a young girl. images 32, 33 completing the series on king cotton are two other stereoviews, one of a group of men and boys waiting for their wagon teams at a cotton gin in florida, the other showing bales of cotton being loaded on a levee in texas. the three photographs span the twenty year period from 1879 to about 1900. however, they clearly illustrate life for many southern african americans as it continued well into the 20th century. for even in the 1960s and collectible card game.

Glasses and i was using my rifle scope. fifteen antelopes: bucks, does, and fawns. an old doe picked us out almost instantly, and stood with her telescopic eyes fastened on the patch of grass from which we were sticking our heads. if you don't think antelopes can see, by the way, just try hunting them. their eyes are as good, i convinced, as those of a human being armed with 8x glasses, and, unlike other american game, antelopes seem to be able to distinguish stationary objects. i have had deer almost walk over me when i remained still. but i had to think of the bucks. there were four of them. i had to make up my mind in a hurry, as every animal in the herd had taken a tip from that wise old doe. to shoot or not to shoot! "the big one on the right has a good head, but the horns look pretty brown.the buck next to him has a nice spread but not much beam.all those does are wet." this was the gist of the rapidly whispered conversation between john and myself. then the head turned almost as a unit and began to run. the legs of an antelope are as good as his eyes and the speed with which a frightened antelope can leave the country is something few persons who have not actually timed one can believe. an antelope can make the fastest coyote look sick. i've seen coyotes try to catch them. this particular herd of antelopes stretched out, opened the throttle, and scrammed. when they settled down to a low, hard, even run, they must have been raveling over that rocky, volcanic country at close to fifty miles an hour. before we got back to the car, however, we saw exactly the buck were looking for, a cynical old fellow who had been driven away from the herd by younger and friskier bucks. he came out of a shallow draw about 250 yards away, and i didn't even need the glasses to know he was the buck i was after. it would be pleasant to say i got him. i didn't. i think it was that head that did it. even through a scope of less than 8x, i could tell it was probably the largest head i have ever seen. it was incredible, even on anderson mesa, where the bucks grow big horns. i had a world record right under my nose; or more than 200 yards from my nose to be exact and i missed. i wanted that buck so much i could taste it, but i could no more hit him than i could fly. the bullets went in front of him, behind him, over his back, below his belly, and, when he went unreached over the sky line at 400 yards, he was going as fast as his stiffening legs could propel him. "well, " i said, reloading my rifle with shaking fingers and feeling about eight inches tall, "i missed him." "a little antelope fever?" john asked. continued on page 10. Higher income is a stimulating learning environment. the number of books and newspapers in the home and the access of children to learning experiences routinely explain about a third of the poverty "effect, " as discussed in the article by jeanne brooks-gunn and lisa markman in this issue.12 although suggestive of a causal link between poverty and achievement, this evidence should not be taken as the final word. a subsequent study, based on the same data used by smith and her coauthors but ruling out a longer list of alternative explanations for the achievement gap, estimated a considerably smaller difference between low- and high-income children.13 a series of experimental welfare reform evaluation studies during the 1990s made it possible to observe how increases in family income affect children's development. although all the experimental programs increased parental employment, only certain programs increased family income. only when income was increased did preschool and elementary school children's academic achievement improve.14 for young children, family income gains of roughly , 000 a year translated into achievement gains of about 0.07 standard deviation, about 1 point on our reference test. sustained over time, even such small gains may be economically profitable, leading to sizable increases in lifetime earnings.15 income, it appears, does matter for children's achievement, although perhaps not as much as some early studies suggested. estimated at more than , 000, the gaps in family income between white children and black and hispanic children are huge. what policies might begin to close these gaps? one strategy, embodied in several of the welfare reform programs described above, is to.

I believe this system works well. the company that runs this game and moderates it for us has been timely in their information-giving and with keeping us up to date on the monetary situation so we don't miss out on a turn or two. all in all i feel they do a first rate job and should be commended for keeping things running smoothly. i appreciate their hard work and willingness to enterprise such a diversion as i sure many others will attest. i do hope the chaps across the pond do know how much they are appreciated and will continue to keep the system running and keep the variants a'coming.' george martinez - `i truly enjoy it. it brings a little bit of everything to the table. you have military strategy, player interaction, undecided neutrals that can sway the game and team coordiantion is a must. and you can play each nation any way you want, even throw in some roleplaying. i have been in middle earth for 12 years and it looks like i'm in to stay. i have been though gsi, dge, and now mepbm and i must say that the best, fairest, and most customer oriented of the three has been mepbm. i sing their praise and sing it loudly.' and rook card game.

Welcome to the age of mobility. just five years ago, traveling executives, sales people and field personnel were the few toting notebooks through airports and tucking pdas personal digital assistants ; into suit pockets for quick access to calendars and contacts. slowly but surely, however, more and more businesses are recognizing the top-line benefits of enhanced mobility: the ability to respond more quickly to customers, partners and changing market conditions, and to work much more efficiently and productively. in business after business, the mobile user is becoming the norm. according to market research firm in-stat mdr, by the end of 2004, u.s. businesses were supporting approximately 94 million remote and or mobile workers. that translates to nearly 70 percent of all u.s. employees. by 2008, the mobile population will increase to 105 million remote and or mobile workers, or more than 72 percent of employees. not only has the population of mobile users spiked, but there are more types of mobile users now as well, including: traditional road-warrior executive, sales, marketing, field and logistics personnel. telecommuters who spend a significant percentage of office hours working from home. many work on company-purchased notebooks, which they carry when visiting the corporate office location. day extenders--a newer category that works principally at the office, but brings work home for evening and weekend hours or for efficient use of a long commute on a train, for example. office warriors or corridor cruisers--the newest type of mobile users--who spend many hours in meetings or traveling from office to office. mobile devices and wireless connectivity let these users do work and stay connected while in the conference room, hallway, cafeteria, or the branch office. these employees even print seamlessly without having to wrestle with cables, simply by walking within range of a wireless-enabled printer. the reality is, more and more of today's employees expect to connect as often as possible, and increasingly, without wires. they expect to get their office email, phone calls and instant messages; require connectivity to the web and essential business applications; and need to create, print and share the same content they can create, print and share on the traditional desktop pc. these employees want access to the most up-to-date company data so they can close sales without having to wait or schedule another meeting. they want to hold impromptu web conferences with one another, instantly, to collaborate and make decisions quickly in order to stay competitive in today's rapidly changing markets. and they want to be able to work both at and away from the office so they can balance their work and personal lives more effectively. and it's not just large enterprises going mobile. small.

Any pawn in its owner's first or second rank may make a two-square "initial move, " even if it has already moved. any pawn making such a move may be captured en passant. pawns may promote only to queen, rook, knight or bishop. they may not promote to new types of piece. pawns which reach the last rank by any means except a normal pawn move do not promote unless the card which moved them specifically says they do promote, and may not promote to a piece which creates an immediate checkmate. if your pawn reaches the last rank on your opponent's move, via a card which allows promotion, it promotes immediately. in case of simultaneous promotions by both players, the moving player must declare first. turn: the period of one player's action. this normally includes one move and, optionally, the play or discard of one card. in addition, a card may also be played by the acting player's opponent, either during or immediately after the turn and trading card game.

I just got a my first compound bow. its a "hand me down" browning bushmaster with a 60 lb pull. what arrows should i use for target practice? what would i need for hunting hogs? the last time i shot a bow was in indian guides when i was a kid. any tips that will help me? rifle hunting for deer and hogs has lost something for me. it seems like its no longer hunting, just killing. thanks for any information you can give.--greg, garland texas that old browning could be aok greg as long as it is good working order and it fits you properly. check the string and cables and examine it closely for wear and tear. it is imperative that the draw length matches your draw and the poundage is comfortable and graceful for you. be sure to take it by a proshop you trust and double check the measurements and the bow's overall condition, then if all is ready to rock, set it up and have fun. matching arrows are simple to determine based on the setup and you will use the same arrows for target shooting and hunting, but with target heads and hunting heads of course. and don't give up on gun hunting, just aspire to more demanding shooting accomplishments and enjoy-enjoy! i still like fred bear's slogan, "be a two season hunter!" go slow and practice thoughtfully and often to become a good, ultra aware bowhunter. goodluck and godspeed. ted ted, i watching your spirit of the wild tv show and realize you shoot a low poundage bow of 50 lbs. with that draw weight what is the total weight of your arrow with all the paint and the head on the arrow? i guessing you're shooting a 5575 goldtip carbon with a magnus stinger buzzcut 100 grain. how much does the paint weigh on each shaft? do you shoot different weights depending on the animal you're shooting? what is the drop like on the arrow when shot past 20 yards? god bless and good luck to you this year in both your hunting fun and thanks to you from a veteran of the vietnam war.--rob kinney, ok you're correct rob. all my bows these days are setup right around 50 pounds draw weight, and my goldtip 5575 arrows come in around 450 grains loaded and ready for backstrappin with the razorsharp magnus heads! i often dip my entire goldtip arrows in white paint so we can all celebrate the ever mystical flight of the arrow as visibly as possible. i learned that sensual upgrade from the masters fred bear, ben pearson and howard hill many years ago. there is no doubt such increased visibility enhances the overall archery experience, plus it helps identify our hits on game too. especially on tv and video for all to enjoy and learn from. a totally dipped shaft may weigh a few more grains, but i see no difference in flight from my factory goldtip nugent zebra arrows, certainly out to 20 yards. this same bow arrow rig brings home the straps whether i'm bowhunting rabbits, deer, antelope, moose, elk, caribou, buffalo, hogs, even incredibly rugged african beasts like wildebeest, eland, zebra, gemsbok or warthog and more. it is always about a well placed, razorsharp, strong broadhead. thanx for the kind words of support rob. all intelligent, caring americans totally support the courageous warriors of our amazing us support our troops! ted and toby keith with baghdad palace group in iraq ; military my friend. salute to you all! american bloodbrothers, ted & family ted, i an active member of the us army. i spent seven months in combat in iraq. when i come home people ask me; "hey, krout, why do you do it?" well, i do it for people like you. great americans who aren't afraid to stand up for all that america represents. i have been in many situations that required me to take another human life in order to protect my brothers in arms and myself. i believe that for those of us who have been in that situation a part of our soul dies with the enemy. i have found that the only way for me to regain the part of my soul that i lost is through hunting. i recently took a beautiful whitetail using my .44 magnum pistol. i have always used a rifle as my choice of weapon in the past, but i felt something magical about the closeness of the shot, under 25 yards. it was great, my heart was pounding, and i have never experienced anything like it before in my life. i told one of my buddies how great it was to be that close to the game and the pure exhilaration that i felt, he suggested that i try bowhunting. i don't have a lot of money to spend on a bow. do you have any suggestions on how a guy could get into the sport for very little cash? i scheduled to deploy again next spring and wanting to go hog hunting before i go back overseas, so time is of the essence. let me know what you think, and keep up the good fight! thanks-andrew krout, shawnee, ok you make all of us so very proud to be an american hunters, andrew. all good people salute you and all the warriors of the us military for crushing evil around the globe. without your amazing, courageous sacrifices, there would be no "we the people" freedom to go hunting, own and enjoy guns or even have the god given right of property ownership in the good old u.s. of a. godbles you and all the warriors my friend! and your buddy is correct; bowhunting is for you! i too love my handgun hunting for all the same reasons you extol. kick those up a few notches and welcome to the amazing mystical flight of the arrow! there is some wonderful bowhunting to be had with a good, inexpensive used bow and a minimum of gear. proshops can be found all over this great land, and i bet they would all enjoy helping you into our grand sport. i will try to contact you directly to do all i can to help as there is nothing i'd like more than welcoming a true american hero into our sacred bowhunting bloodbrother campfire. godspeed, american bloodbrothers, ted.
Be caught on the roads.59 these failures of discipline elicited a strong response from the regime. after all, the fedayeen saddam was the regime's private army--therefore saddam expected it to possess the highest standards of personal honor and virtue. beginning in 1996, harsh penalties in some cases resembling the harshest examples of sharia islamic ; law became the norm for the fedayeen saddam. these punishments included amputating hands for theft, being tossed off towers for sodomy, being whipped 100 times for sexual harassment, stoning for various infractions, and cutting out tongues for lying.60 given the mixed missions, it was only a matter of time until military failure also became punishable as a criminal offense. in typical iraqi bureaucratic fashion, a table of specific failures and the punishment to be meted out was created and approved. in 1998 the secretariat of the fedayeen saddam issued the following "regulations for when an execution order against the commanders of the various fedayeen": any section commander will be executed if his section is defeated. any platoon commander will be executed, if two of his sections are defeated. any company commander will be executed, if two of his platoons are defeated. any regiment commander will be executed, if two of his companies are defeated. any area commander will be executed if his governate is defeated. any fedayeen saddam fighter including commanders will be executed, if he hesitates in completing his duties, cooperates with the enemy, gives up his weapons, or hides any information concerning the security of the state.61 no wonder that the fedayeen saddam often proved the most fanatical fighters among the various iraqi forces during operation iraqi freedom. on numerous occasions, fedayeen forces hurled themselves against armored columns rushing past the southern cities of as samawah, an najaf, and karbala; and finally even trying to bar entry into baghdad itself, long after the republican guard had mostly quit the field. in the years preceding the coalition invasion, their leaders became enamored with the belief that the spirit of the fedayeen "arab warriors" could overcome rapid maneuver and precision fires that were the major attributes of military doctrine.62 in any event, they proved totally unprepared for the kind of war they were asked to fight, dying by the thousands.
