"i really want her to come here but she made me promise to tell her the truth, how different it is, " said heine, of west suburban riverside, who returned to campus several weeks before classes begin next tuesday. "in some way, everything in the community will be hurricane related. there is no way to escape it." tens of thousands of college students scattered after hurricane katrina smashed new orleans are returning this month to the city's colleges and universities. in a city that celebrates every time another business reopens, the reopening next week of tulane university -- now the city's largest employer -- is like celebrating mardi gras early. some restaurants, bars and shops have pegged their reopening to the return of students, who will bring their energy and money to a city that needs both. they'll also help ease a labor shortage that has led fastfood restaurants to offer hundreds of dollars in monthly bonuses. students, while excited to be back, worry about the long-term effects of academic program cuts and whether the culture that brought them to new orleans, including all-night bars , poetry slams and coffee shop concerts, will continue. at the city's four main private universities, with a large out-of-state population, anywhere from 50 percent to 90 percent of undergraduates are expected back. freshmen are returning in the lowest numbers -- 79 percent at tulane, for example -- after many began college elsewhere. others felt too unsure about going back to a city hit with one of the country's worst natural disasters. upper classmen, graduate and professional students are expected to return in higher numbers. among the 40, 000 students returning are hundreds from illinois, including 289 enrolled in the spring semester at tulane and 75 at loyola university new orleans. students who started classes this week have said that at times, it feels like they never left. at loyola, one of the two campuses that began classes monday, there were long lines at the bookstore, confusion about classroom locations and students reading in tranquil palm court. like every new school year, freshmen are excited to make new friends, except now they're introducing themselves by saying, "where did you go?" instead of, "where are you from?" but they're also returning to changed campuses and neighborhoods, where katrina's impact is everywhere. there are fewer professors but hundreds of construction workers busy repairing tulane's campus, where freshmen move in thursday, and orientation activities at loyola university now include bus tours through neighborhoods wiped out by the storm and on line slot machines.
