Hillel italie new york -- it takes just seconds to leave behind this muted harlem side street and enter the parlor of maya angelou's brownstone, a step as bright and quick as a black and white film dissolving into technicolor. plump sofas and armchairs in bursts of green, blue, red and yellow form a ring on spotless hardwood floors. toward the rear, like a shy, well-dressed prodigy, a baby grand piano looks shined to stage perfection. by the piano, stained glass doors open to a red dining area centered by a mahogany table as big and round as the voice of angelou herself. still close to her youthful height of 6 feet, the author-poet-dancersinger-activist is ready to celebrate her 80th birthday, feeling, she says, like she's 60, wearing a dark blouse and slacks, sipping apple juice, singing hymns, reciting latin, whispering, laughing, crying, missing lost friends or planning to make new ones. "i don't know how long i'm going to live, but i still see my life as an adventure, " says angelou, who divides her time between new york and a house in winston-salem, n.c. she has filled six volumes of memoirs with her wild, tragic, unstoppable story: growing up with segregation as a child and motherhood at 17; from strip clubs and brothels to nightclubs and broadway; the assassinations of her friends malcolm x and the rev. martin luther king jr.; a classic memoir, hallmark cards and the adoration of oprah winfrey. wealthy and famous beyond even her admittedly immodest dreams, she is no closer to settling. With the permission of his cardiologist, matthew could play in any noncontact sport he wanted. he immediately tried out for the baseball team, his favorite sport. he became one of the starting pitchers and the 2nd baseman on the varsity squad. he also participated on the school's varsity swim team and earned the most valuable player title for two years, shattering four school records. for fun during the summer months, matthew likes to barefoot water ski. "before matthew had the pacemaker implanted he was tired all the time and short of breath. he wanted to do all these things, but physically he couldn't. it was as if he was a new person after the implant, " explained luann. matthew recently received a new medtronic pacemaker in march of 2000. "i was happy to see that the size of my new pacemaker decreased and that it weighs less, " says matthew. i was also surprised to hear about all of and math card games. 374 | season 8 that, 1013 has given us episodes like "hungry" or this week's offering "redrum" and for the first time we get an episode that is even doggett light. while "redrum" was certainly a well made hour of television, i'm just not sure it was the x-files. it's almost as if "redrum" was actually the script to another show some sort of anthology mystery supernatural thing like "twilight zone" or that ilk and the characters we recognized were merely tossed in because they had to be, not because they mattered to the show one bit. i wish writer steven maeda had found a better way to include them in the story. instead he falls back on the worn out show formula that once you join the x-files weirdo things start happening to your family and everyone you know even if you haven't seen a guy in three years. scully should have warned doggett about that part of the job when she gave the guy a desk. then again we could decide to believe that all of "redrum" happened because scully now has a magic omega product placement watch to go along with her believer status. in the little time we actually saw scully and her magic time travel watch she makes a halfhearted attempt at the reluctant believer bit again, dragging up a chair when wells starts going on about premonitions. is the woman looking for an x-file in everything now or did she just inherit mulder's spidey sense while he's gone? still, she isn't even in the episode enough to do much more than give out some paranormal feel-good mumbo jumbo with an eyebrow half cocked about finding the answer within before skipping out for a latte. frankly i thought robert patrick's line reading on "make sure i skip that frickin' meeting" was one of the most entertaining things about the entire episode. still, i will admit that "redrum" held my interest primarily due to the top notch performance by joe morton as martin wells. i found his moment with the kids and the shaky way he pulled out the photos of his wife's murder to be especially poignant. this episode would have failed miserably with a lesser actor. director peter markle also did a fine job with "redrum" i especially liked the opening shot of the spider web as we then move into focus on wells and began to untangle his web. so anyway, "redrum" wasn't a bad hour of television, but given a season in which we are already missing mulder i'd rather watch something that has to actually do with the regular characters on the show instead of someone the new guy used to know. that is the reason the "redrum" tape will be one of those that gathers dust on my shelf. random musings date stamp: they're all over the place in this one. of course scully still isn't showing even though we are clear into the second week of december, but that's our boys at 1013. she'll probably get magically huge in may after having been pregnant a year. inside joke: the case number for martin's court appearance was 8abx03 which is actually the episode number for "redrum". truth be told, there is really no reason why scully and doggett should be traipsing around with evidence to confront wells with. it's not even remotely their case so they have no business waving that card key or pictures in front of his face when his lawyer is not even present. i can't be the only one disappointed that they did not change the tag line to "the truth is going to keep you in here and make you somebody's bitch". i feel that way about the x-files sometimes. it's a lot more likely than the truth is out there these days. frank's fashion spot: i'm starting to think that scully only has like 4 outfits total this season. are they having to pay duchovny so much money that they can't even afford to shop for her anymore? i'm just glad that the obsse presented gillian anderson with a bunch of buttons to give to scully this week. lets hope she puts them to good use. well, i guess i can't complain too much about an episode that has scully in not one but two turtlenecks. how big an apartment does doggett need? that thing was huge compared to mulder or scully's. he must be pulling quite a salary as kersh's lapdog. our little sailor: was scully even in this episode long enough to swear? i refuse to do this for the supporting cast. i guess after all that in "roadrunners" we don't really need it this week anyway. well, doggett is perhaps taking that "don't ditch your partner" mantra a little too far since he obviously calls scully in the middle of the night and makes her drive to baltimore just because a guy he hasn't seen in three years knocks on his door with crazy talk. i guess all those other cops were not the proper back up as far as he was concerned. scully must be a pretty fast dresser at that as doggett is still in that shirt he was sleeping in and she manages to throw on a suit for the night time event. manly man meter: things were once again pretty manly this week. most impressive was doggett running straight at a guy shooting a gun and taking him down. plus he did bust down the door and tackle spiderman and then shoot him in the nick of time later. The heightened entertainment value notwithstanding, there's a pragmatic attraction associated with the game and 2 person card games. Hello again, fellow players! welcome to the second issue of the carolinacon regional meccg newsletter! my first issue was a great success thanks to you and your ideas, and hopefully i have taken enough of them to heart to make this an even better issue. as much as you all have indicated that you enjoyed the first issue, this one should be just as entertaining. i was lucky enough to have attended origins '98, and will do my best to fill you in on all the furious action and mayhem! i have also gathered inside information from ice concerning some new ideas coming forth about middle earth: the balrog. as of this writing, i have asked ice to let me make this the official meccg newsletter, and so far they seem enthusiastic about the possibilities. issue #3 will be the first official meccg newsletter. look for its release at this year's us nationals, october 1-4 see page 21 for details. ; in order to keep this newsletter timely, i have decided to forego reproducing it in color. the original will be done in color, and all the reproductions in black and white. believe me, it takes an inordinate amount of time and expense to print in color as opposed to black and white. for now, that means that this newsletter will get to you sooner. i interested in eventually going to color full-time, as i think it makes for a more visually stimulating newsletter, however, it would definitely mean attaching a price to the newsletter, something i have tried to avoid thus far. i will keep color in mind as we go along, and will let you know as soon as i figure something out. i currently shopping around for a decent price and online trading card games. Hat are you doing this weekend, joe?" hobby asked. i try to keep up the semblance of being a writer. "i'm working on a story. what's up?" "it's the annual avalon poker run. i signed you up; we can bring the girls along, too." i agreed. inviting kim-- with whom i seriously behind in brownie points after forgetting our last date--may get me back in her good graces. she asked if she could show off her new bikini. i readily concurred; too bad if others were jealous. hobby, nattily attired in short sailing whites, got his 60 foot power cruiser, lazybuns under way to catalina island. i asked, "so what's the drill for the poker run?" "the only thing i'm sure of, it costs 100 bucks to enter, which you owe me. otherwise it's a mystery." "hell, hobby, what did you get when you signed up?" "oh, yeah. i've got it somewhere, " he said as he began to fumble through his pockets. "voila! here it is. you figure it out joe." on a small card was the message: go to a bar and order a margarita with an olive. "what's this, hobby? do you know what bar?" "no idea, joe." "that's great, there's got to be a dozen or more watering holes in avalon. i can picture getting plastered before there's any poker. where would we start?" "that's why i brought you along, joe. i need a good strategist." i checked local directories and avalon street maps that hobby had aboard and came up with a list of 15 possibilities. after anchoring in the bay, hobby and i and the girls took the rubber dinghy into avalon and rules of card games.
Whether and to which extent you can use file sharing and network browsing on your machine and in your network highly depends on the network structure and on the configuration of your machine. before setting up either of them, contact your system administrator to make sure that your network structure supports this feature and to check whether your company's security policies permit it. network browsing, be it smb browsing for windows shares or slp browsing for remote services, relies heavily on the machine's ability to send broadcast messages to all clients in the network. these messages and the clients' replies to them enable your machine to detect any available shares or services. for broadcasts to work effectively, your machine must be part of the same subnet as all other machines it is querying. if network browsing does not work on your machine or the detected shares and services do not match with what you expected, contact your system administrator to make sure that you are connected to the appropriate subnet. to allow network browsing, your machine needs to keep several network ports open to send and receive network messages that provide details on the network and the availability of shares and services. the standard opensuse is configured for tight security and has a firewall up and running that protects your machine against the internet. to adjust the firewall configuration, you would either need to ask your system administrator to open a certain set of ports to the network or to tear down the firewall entirely according to your company's security policy. if you try to browse a network with a restrictive firewall running on your machine, konqueror warns you about your security restrictions not allowing it to query the network.
