Reetings soccer fans. this weekend 8 21 & 22 ; some of the 56er teams kicked off the season at a tournament hosted by fc milwaukee at uihlein park. it was a great weekend with many of the teams doing quite well and others getting used to new coaches and players alike. aside from coaching my own teams, i was also able to get around and watch our other teams as well and was very excited and proud of the way our teams performed and conducted themselves on the field. everyone was competitive and looked solid in their performances. two games which stood out for me were the u11 boys and girls. this year marks the beginning of small sided for this age group, moving from 11 v 11 down to 8 v field players and a 'keeper ; . the fields and goals have been adjusted for the players' age and size and the results were fantastic. the players get to goal in no time allowing for lots of scoring opportunities and not just for the forwards. it is easy for midfield and defending players to get themselves forward to get chances to shoot which of course makes the game exciting for everyone. while increasing scoring opportunities is one of the reasons for the move to small sided it is not necessarily the most important. players are getting many more touches on the ball individual skill development ; and are forced to make tactical decisions much more regularly with a more instant result of moving the ball around the entire field and of course closer to goal. in the spring i coached some u11 games and watched while the players struggled to move the ball up field without resorting to just kicking it long, a strategy that will certainly not help them as they mature and must find other ways to get into the attacking end. in this game with a smaller field, an over hit service to space will simply run out of bounds for the other team's goal kick. the players from both teams seemed to know this and were looking for and performing give and go's and short passing in order to get from one place to another. on the big field this was done far less often and with less noticeable results. with a larger field speed and athleticism tend to be rewarded more than individual skill and intelligence whereas in the smaller space just the opposite is true. anyone who has had the opportunity to watch high level soccer knows that individual skill and the ability to solve problems quickly by assessing options and choosing the right one at a particular moment is the key to success. yes, speed and athleticism are always going to be a factor, it is that way in most any sport as we move up the competitive ladder. but in this environment the players are forced to learn basic and necessary soccer skills beyond their natural talents which will better serve them and their coaches in the future.
